The second angel sounded, and something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea; and a third of the sea became blood, and a third of the creatures which were in the sea and had life, died; and a third of the ships were destroyed. Revelation 8:8-9
That's a lot—just do the math on those fractions. The first trumpet sounded, and although death wasn’t mentioned, a third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned, all the green grass was burned.
Then the second trumpet sounded and something like a burning mountain was thrown into the sea. It wasn’t truly a mountain, but something like a mountain. Whatever it was though, it was huge and blazing. It was thrown, not onto the land, but into the sea. The first trumpet will cause destruction on the land, this second trumpet will cause similar devastation in the sea.
Just how much devastation? One-third of the sea will become blood. Again, we can’t help but be reminded of the plagues in Exodus. This fiery mountain-like mass will cause one-third of the creatures which are in the sea to die. In addition, one-third of the ships of the sea will be destroyed by it.
The ruination is more than amazing! The word “catastrophic” doesn’t even do it justice, does it…
Think for a moment. Would this sort of event be noticeable to the inhabitants of the earth? Yeah… I'm thinking so. It's hard to believe but, there are people who actually believe these things have already happened. If this cataclysmic event had happened, we most definitely would have heard!
Once again, our focus needs to be on the main and plain facts presented by the text. Here’s the facts: the second trumpet judgment is exactly that—a judgment. It is a judgment from God, a warning to the inhabitants of the planet. He is loudly proclaiming that He alone is God, everything belongs to Him, He has all rights to everything, and He expects His creation to recognize His authority over everything in it—including each and every person on the planet!
They won’t though… so a third trumpet will sound…
