The first 39 books of the Bible are called the Old Testament. 12 of those books are called the Minor Prophets (because the books are small). Zechariah is the eleventh of the 12.
Zechariah was a prophet at the same time as Haggai. He prophesied with the same purpose—to get the people to finish the rebuilding of God’s Temple. However, Zechariah’s message of encouragement additionally included detailed visions of the future for Israel, both her judgments and her glories.
The book starts off with eight visions in the first six chapters and ends with specific details of the Day of the Lord, culminating with the final earthly Kingdom of the Lord. Along the way, he covers information about fasts and feasts, gives one oracle against the nations, and another concerning Israel.
Zechariah put the present time of restoration in its true perspective—that of future blessings and glory when finally Israel will call on the Name of the Lord their God.
