The first 39 books of the Bible are called the Old Testament. 12 of those books are called the Minor Prophets (because the books are small). Malachi is the twelfth of the 12.
It is just around 400 years before Jesus, the Messiah of the nation of Israel would be born. God would be silent during those many years. Malachi is the last written prophecy we have before the birth of the Promised One.
The people were apathetic and sinful. They sinned against one another, the leaders against the people, and both against God. God accuses, warns and threatens, as well as announcing the coming of His Messenger, the Messiah.
Only a few of those who heard feared the Lord—but those few would be spared. The great and terrible Day of the Lord was (and is) coming and in it God will distinguish between the righteous and the wicked, between the one who serves God and the one who does not. Every evildoer will be like chaff set ablaze, but for every one who fears the Name of the Lord, they will be God’s Own special treasured possession.
