Psalm 2: 1-6 Why are the nations in an uproar and the peoples devising a vain thing? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers take counsel together against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, “Let us tear their fetters apart and cast away their cords from us!” He who sits in the heavens laughs, the Lord scoffs at them. Then He will speak to them in His anger and terrify them in His fury, saying, “But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain.”
God is referred to as “He Who sits in the heavens”. Don’t miss the purpose of this description. While the haughty, though impotent, creation creates a frenzied, chaotic scheme to overthrow the Lord and His Anointed, they are blind to the fact that they are but earthlings, mere mortals, beings that decay daily.
However, God, does not forget who they are and more importantly, God does not forget Who He is! God is the One Who is enthroned in the heavens. He dwells in a place that is inaccessible to men ruling over everything and all things. He created both domains—the heavens and the earth, and He does not concede His rulership in either arena, especially to frail, abased humanity.
As the Glorious Majesty sits unthreatened in His chosen dwelling place, His reaction bears witness of the infinite chasm between His Own transcendent Glory and the comparatively minuscule glory of His creation—He laughs, He scoffs at them. But He is not done. He will not ignore His creation’s arrogant disdain. Instead, He demands to receive His due Glory from them. He is not provoked to anger as if lowly man deserves His reaction. Rather He is righteously wrathful. He will terrify them as He unveils His wrath. His holiness and justice demand it.
Psalm 2: 4-9 I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD: He said to Me, “You are My Son, today I have begotten You. Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, and the very ends of the earth as Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron, You shall shatter them like earthenware.”
People just don’t want to think about it—they don’t want to believe it; but Jesus is coming again and He is going to rule over this entire world. He will rule over every nation and every person—and He will be obeyed. Those who resist Him will meet His rod of iron! No diplomacy—just sovereign and righteous control. Really sounds unbelievable in our modern age of “everyone has the right to do whatever he wants”, doesn’t it? As foreign as it sounds, though, it will be the law of the land. Believers everywhere are waiting for this Glorious day when our God takes up His throne and begins His reign over mankind!
Psalm 2: 10-12 Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; take warning, O judges of the earth. Worship the LORD with reverence and rejoice with trembling. Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, for His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!
The kings of the earth have always wanted to break free from the rule of God. At one point in time, in the not so distant future, they will gather together and foment a conspiracy to utterly rebel against God and His Son irrevocably. However, their plot will not succeed. Why not? Because God has installed His King forever and ever.
Even though God’s Son has not yet taken up His throne and begun to rule with His rod of iron, He is still, nevertheless, Ruler over all—even today… even now… A not so imaginary game of chess is about to end… If I were you, I’d show discernment…
